Added 2026-07-24, gated to admin/teacher-only (requireTier('staff')) for initial testing. 2026-07-26: moved to the normal Sign-up Required section (any signed-in student can see the card), but the page itself has a DOUBLE gate — sign-in first (so visits track as a real member, same as every other Sign-up Required page), then a passcode overlay on top of that for non-staff students, so only students the teacher actually hands a code to can get past it. Codes are generated/managed on the admin dashboard's Passcode Manager (same "Never expiry" pattern as the other passcode tools). Admin/teacher accounts bypass the passcode entirely. Daily question quota (25/day) and question logs (ai_shane_logs) are keyed by the student's real uid, same as before — the passcode is purely an extra access gate, not a quota key.

Hand-picked true single-sound minimal pairs pulled from the same pair-banks.js word list as the Minimal Pairs Challenge, but grouped by pronunciation category (Short a vs Short o, l vs r, cl vs cr, aar vs ur, etc.) instead of by difficulty tier. Word 1 and Word 2 columns always hold the same sound throughout a category. Growing over time as new categories are requested.

Added 2026-07-09: a new "teacher" role sits between Admin and Sign-up Required. Anyone granted teacher status (via the Manage Teachers panel on the admin dashboard) gets the same site-wide access as admin, except eionpo-admin-dashboard.html and eionpo-admin-passcodes.html, which stay admin-only. All admin-only checks across the site now check "admin OR teacher" through a shared js/auth-guard.js module instead of the old hardcoded-email-per-page pattern. The general "Student Passcodes" section (pending requests + manual generate) was moved from the Passcode Manager to the main dashboard, right under Manage Teachers, so the whole "create student account → grant teacher access" flow lives on one page. Uses the same CMU-Pronouncing-Dictionary-based converter as phonetic-converter.html (~135k words), plus a weak-form reduction pass so function words like "to," "her," "for," "was" show their natural unstressed pronunciation instead of full citation-form stress. The page now has its own Firebase Auth admin-only guard (redirects non-admins to index.html), replacing the passcode gate it originally inherited from Speak & Listen.

Each card shows the sign, IPA, spelling variants, classification badge (HC/SC/FC/NC), Japanese mouth-position note, example words with the target letter underlined, a practice sentence, and a Play Sound button. Meant to replace PowerPoint during live lessons.

The "🌐 Detect Dialect" button is admin-only (greyed out, title="Admin only", for teachers/students) since it calls Claude Sonnet via the eionpo-claude-proxy Worker — a paid API call per use.
